Goede seizoensstart voor Bret Groot
De toeschouwers bij de landelijke baan hadden hem dit seizoen al veel zien winnen, maar ook in het internationale deelnemersveld van de Holland Cup stond Bret Groot zijn mannetje. Dit leverde hem de 2e plaats in het eindklassement bij de kadetten op, achter Siebe Suttels.
Bij de seizoensopening in Heerenveen won Bret de 500 meter en de puntenkoers, bij de 2e wedstrijd in Wervershoof won hij de 1000 meter en de afvalkoers. Afgelopen weekend reed hij op de 300 meter 28,069, goed voor de overwinning.
Wij zochten Bret op na zijn laatste race in Heerde en stellen hem graag aan jullie voor:
Hoe lang skeeler je al? “Ik skeeler nu 6 of 7 jaar, dit is het 4e jaar dat ik echt wedstrijden rij. Ik vind het best wel leuk om te doen en het gaat ook goed.”
Waar train je? “Ik train in Almere, nu met Skate United (Midden-Nederland), maar eerst reed ik altijd bij ASV.”
Van je trainer, Marcel Scheperkamp, hoorden we dat dit je eerste echte Europacup wedstrijd is, hoe vind je dat? “Het is wel leuk, het ging ook best wel goed. Alleen net niet gewonnen op de 500 meter, maar hij (Siebe Suttels) was gewoon beter.”
Bret reed al wel eens bij de Flanders Grand Prix in Oostende en het Internationaal Weekend in Nederland, maar nu verbaasde vooral de Portugezen hem. “Die ene Portugees bij de langere afstanden (Jocio do Silva Martins) reed wel goed en Siebe Suttels dus.”
Train je vaak in Almere? “Ik train twee keer in de week op skates en ook nog wel eens fietsen of krachttraining. Ik woon ook in Almere, op een kwartiertje fietsen van de baan.”
Tijdens een Europacup weekend is er de kans om grote international toppers in actie te zien. Bret vond vooral de lange afstanden cool om te zien. Naar dat niveau wil hij ook wel toe werken.
Je reed nu zowel de sprint als de lange afstand, wat is je specialiteit? “Kort gaat net even wat beter, in de winter heb ik vooral op sprinten getraind en nu probeer ik wel weer een beetje conditie te krijgen zodat ik ook op de lange afstand wat beter ga presteren.”
Op de puntenkoers werd Bret 3e en op de afvalkoers 7e, dus dat is helemaal niet slecht.
Schaats je ook? “Ja ik schaats in de winter bij Amsterdam op de Jaap Edenbaan bij de C-selectie. Ik vind skeeleren denk ik net even iets leuker. Ik kan het ook net even wat beter. Met schaatsen rij je altijd alleen, met skeeleren heb je meer actie in het peloton.”

Patxi Peula skated a good European Championship, the victory in the marathon went to Bart Swings, but he took 2nd place. He also recieved his gold medal for the elimination race after the final marathon in Oostende. We talked to him about this tournament…
Chloé Geoffroy: “full gas to the finish line”
After a long breakaway of two Italians the victory in the marathon at Euros went to Chloé Geoffroy from France. In the last few laps the chasing group caught up with the leaders and only just before the finish line Chloé managed get in front.
Pascal Briand: “We just want to have a clear sport”
In the French Team for the Euros this year there was no place for the top skaters who were at Worlds. Also the French Federation decided to boycott the new team sprint and the 200 meter. We talked about that with Pascal Briand, coach of the French National Team.

The junior ladies from Austria
Three years ago the European Championships were in Wörgl, Austria. At that time the Austrian team was not very big, only Vanessa Herzog won medals then. This year Vanessa is not at the Euros, she’s already training for the ice season. The junior ladies Anna Petutschnigg, Laura Nagiller and Kathi Thien were at the Flanders Grand Prix and we talked to all of them.
Wisselend succes voor Nederland op de relay
Op de relay moet alles kloppen, timing, goede aflossingen, blijven staan en dan nog een eindsprint. Bij de junioren heren was dat vandaag het geval. Harm Visser vertelt hoe het is om goud te winnen. Medals for the Czech Republic
The team from the Czech Republic has won a lot of medals already. Radek Fajkus and Zdenek Sejpal both won medals on the first day. They talked to us after the races on Fridaynight. On day 2 of the Euros Tomas Bohumsky won his first medal and Zdenek was on the podium again.
